| This week’s Thursday Tips [TT] relates to oral health, specifically gum health, and how this relates to your brain health! But first, a very warm welcome to new people joining the [TT] mailing list – where I share bite-size brain health tips to thrive. Today, we have new friends from the Mindfulness Book and from the Sleep for Migraine BRA(i)NS® workshop I did at the Integrative & Personalised Medicine conference last week 🙂 – a very warm welcome, to all friends old and new! Healthy Gums, Healthy Brains! Good oral health isn’t just for beautiful sparkling smiles. Sparkling smiles can contribute to healthier brains! Gum disease is linked with inflammation molecules circulating in the blood, and bacteria associated with the development of Alzheimer’s disease. It is also linked with chronic migraines, and good oral health can improve migraines. Now that’s just the brain aspect. Oral health is also important for your metabolic, cardiac and overall body health. Stress And Gum Disease Did you know that stress management is a key part of gum and oral health? There is indeed fascinating research published last year about the neuroimmune factors playing a role in this (Zhang et al 2023). So, in addition to good oral hygiene, do consider stress management approaches. How about some Mindful Brushing? Try this the next time you brush your teeth: – Notice the sensation of your toothbrush against your teeth and gums. – Perhaps you notice the circular movement of your brush against your gums. Or the taste of your toothpaste. – Stay with this observation for as long as you can. – You could even count the number of teeth brushed mindfully. – When your mind wanders (it happens!), gently come back to observing the teeth-brushing sensations. Make it a game/ challenge: see how many more teeth you cover in this mindful state each time you brush your teeth! Reward: great oral health feedback from your dentist 😄 If you’re interested in mindful practices that you can easily apply in your daily life, I share many more practices in my book: Mindfulness for Brain Health. This helps extend the positive reach of this book, as it helps make it more discoverable, thank you! ❤️ I’m so grateful for the 5-star reviews so far! Here are a few in case you’re considering this book 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 “This is a lovely little book. It is written in a clear and concise way which makes it easy for everyone to follow, even if new to mindfulness. It is broken down into very helpful headings and I love the sketches. It’s not too big to be daunting and with the way it is written, it will be easy to go back over to find sections to re read when the need arises. It’s extremely cheap for such a great little book and is one that should be on everyone’s bookshelf. I plan to buy a few more as gifts because I think it will be well received and really helpful particularly for younger people as an introduction to mindfulness as a coping mechanism when going through life’s challenges.” 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 “As someone fascinated by both mindfulness and neuroscience, “Mindfulness for Brain Health” is a true gem. Dr. Wong weaves together the scientific foundations of mindfulness with practical meditation techniques, creating a bridge between the abstract and the experiential. It’s not often you find a book that delves into the complexities of the brain while remaining accessible and engaging. What sets this book apart is its emphasis on the tangible benefits of mindfulness for brain health. By explaining the science behind the practice. If you’re looking for a book that seamlessly blends science and mindfulness, “Mindfulness for Brain Health” is an excellent choice. It’s informative, inspiring, and most importantly, a joy to read.” References about oral health for those interested: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10055602/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32280099/ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10350603/https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36437431/ |
